Do parents need packed lunch lessons?

With more and more children becoming overweight the government are concidering giving parents lessons on how to pack a healthy lunch for their children.

I must admit that I sometimes struggled with what to put in my eldest son’s lunch box; he was a fussy eater and wouldn’t eat any fruit. He was partial to a raw carrot so I would put carrot sticks in, he also liked cheese and certain flavours of yoghurt, so with a few sandwiches that was as healthy as I could make it under the circumstances.

I think a lot of what parents put in their children’s pack lunch is a learnt behaviour; if they were fed an unhealthy diet, as children they know no different and will feed their own children in the same way. I also think that all the fast food companies that are popping up in every town aren’t helping families with eating a healthy diet.

What happens if parents put fruit and vegetables in the lunch box and the child throws it away?

The parent will think that it has been eaten!

Perhaps it’s time for schools to ban packed lunches and all children should have school dinners- that are regulated and have to be heathy and nutritious.

I also think that all children should be entitled to free school dinners, so parents don’t have the worry of the cost.

    1. You are a child minder, I presume, Emma? Thanks for taking the time to read and share your experience

  2. I definitely think there’s something in learnt behavior when it comes to reaching for unhealthy snacks and lunchbox items. Also a bit of peer pressure too to have the right brands seems to come into play as they get older. I would have welcomed packed lunch lessons! 🙂 Thank you for joining us for the #DreamTeam x

  3. My younger two have school dinners everyday unless I know they wouldn’t eat it so I send a packed lunch. My youngest eats things at school that he would never try at home! I think schools need to be very clear on their packed lunch policy so that parents have no choice but to abide by it. Thanks for linking up with #DreamTeam

    1. That sounds like a good balance, Laura, thanks for sharing and for having me as part of the linky
