Most of my readers will be aware that I am a disabled stroke survivor. It is also common knowledge that I have been planning on going out alone in my electric wheelchair.
A friend suggested that I contact driving miss. Daisy, Barnstaple to see if they could help with this,(It is actually run by someone that I went to school with, many years ago).
I did get in touch and we arranged for a home visit. Mark and Sharon visited a week or so later for a chat, they also made sure that my wheelchair would fit into their vehicle safely.
I was asked to complete and sign a form giving permission for the use of photos in their advertising.
I made a booking for the following week.
Mark arrived on time and gave me the confidence to drive my wheelchair into the rear of the vehicle. He attached 2 safety straps which enabled a hoist to guide me in, he then fastened a seat belt around me.
.
During the journey we chatted which helped me to feel relaxed.
Once in town Mark helped me to reverse my chair out of the van (I am a typical female driver, who doesn’t reverse well!) also I find turning my neck difficult due to the stroke. Mark put a lot of thought into were he dropped me off, even parking next to a dropped kerb.
We arranged a time for me to be collected, he said that if I wanted to go home sooner or stay longer to ring him. I met my mother in a cafe for coffee and cake, then wandered into a few shops and even did a little shopping.
Driving miss Daisy, Barnstaple is a fantastic service which offers so much more than a taxi ride, it is not only great for the disabled, the elderly and people with dementia would also benefit from the service.
I highly recommend driving miss Daisy, Barnstaple and will definitely be going into town with them again soon.
I would once again like to thank Mark and Sharon for helping me to get some independence back.
