Matel have recently launched a new Barbie doll, which has Down sydrome.
The doll is wearing a necklace which is the extra Down syndrome chromanone and a dress in the flowery/butterfly bright colours, that are the down syndrome recognised symbols.
Vogue U.K magazine have also published their first issue with a Down syrome girl on the front cover.
When I was working g as a registered child minder, I understood the importance of having inclusive resources, to make everyone feel safe and secure.
This included dolls from Africa and China and one with Down syndrome: As I was caring for a child with Down syndrome at the time I showed this doll to her father to get his opinion; unfortunately I didn’t get the response that I was hoping for: I thought that he would be impressed that I had sourced such an item, but he told me that he found it insulting ( which was not my intension, at all).

I feel that it’e extremely important to have inclusive resources in early years and in schools of course,

Mattel have created some wonderful inclusive Barbies with hearing aids, prosthetic leg, vitiligo, albino. I’m pleased with the new doll, I would buy one.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Elaine

Hello Karen I love all your post in the #DreamTeam I have had a hard time replying with technical difficulties, Google won’t let me! Any they are fabulous. My kids are growing up fast and it’s harder to find those things that spark their eyes, like maybe a coffee from a bear, curious if he serves hot chocolate as well. The book How to Be Famous looks wonderful, I need to read that one. LOL. Also it is neat that manufactures are trying to be more inclusive, so sorry that dude got offended, it is so hard to know how people may react but God knows your intentions were heartfelt and I hope this though makes you feel better. Love your work!
Thanks for your kind words, Erin

What a fab doll…. it’s a bit like books, children like to see themselves reflected in products around us. Barbie is great at being more inclusive now. Definitely love the fuller figured versions of Barbie too! Thank you for joining us for the #DreamTeam xx
Totally agree, Annette, thanks for having me as a part of the linky
I think inclusive toys and books for children are very important. I’m sorry that parent didn’t agree, I know that some feel very differently. I have a Down’s Syndrome cousin and we were brought up with her and she was treated no differently to any of us.
Thanks for sharing, Raisie
