Outdoor activities for spring

At last, spring has arrived, with the promise of warmer wether ahead, meaning that families can enjoy the great outdoors:

Family time, anywhere is important, but spending it outside with nature around us , makes it even more valuable.

My suggestions for satisfying everyone, especially the younger members of a family are:-

To go foraging; even if you don’t find anything that you can safely eat, is fun and a great way of getting some exercise. There are many ‘pick your own’ farms around the country for doing this( and a lot safer than collecting wild food that isn’t meant for human consumption!).

Outdoor arts and crafts:

Whether it’s to gather shells, pinecones or leaves to create something at home, letting children use a camera to photograph plants and animals is great. My youngest used to enjoy laying on his stomach to take micro-shoots of plants and flowers during our dog walks through the fields.

Suppling a notebook and pencils can also satisfy young minds.

Treasure hunting- either set up your own list of items to find or use a dedicated geocaching app on a phone more here

Hiking:

Britain has an abundance of beautiful countryside, with dedicated footpaths, or take a coastal stroll.

Crabbing and bug hunting:

Anyone who lives near or visits the seaside will love crabbing, using a line and bait of bacon you can reel in your catch and place it in a bucket for closer inspection, before setting it free later.

If you don’t have the sea nearby , but greenspace go on a bug hunt instead, cataloging any discoveries as you go.

Discovering a castle, monastery, ruins or even disused railway lines can take you off ‘the beaten track’ to find who knows what.

Enjoy the great outdoors whatever you decide to do.

As always questions and comments are welcome.

Until next time.

  1. Great ideas to get kids outdoors for fun and learning opportunities. We hiked England’s Cotswold Way in 2017, and I was impressed with the plentiful, well-maintained trails and walking paths all throughout the countryside. The scenery was beautiful, and so many local folks were out walking/hiking to enjoy the outdoors.
