Pets for children: ferrets

August 6, 2021 Karen 15 comments

My husband has just celebrated a big birthday and his main present was 3 ferrets.

He used to keep ferrets when he was a lad and decided that he could enjoy them again now.

We have 3 females (jills) named Amy Winehouse, Adele and Badger.

Ferrets can make good pets for older children provided that they are handled EVERY day as this will hopefully prevent them from being scared and from biting the handler.

My husband’s ferrets were given to him at 15 weeks old and had been handled every day by the breeder since birth.

Ferrets do not do well living alone, so you must keep at least 2 together.

Our ferrets live in an outdoor hutch.

As they can be a bit smelly I wouldn’t advise keeping them indoors.

My husband has also built them a winter residence inside the garden shed.

They have a tree branch to climb and a hammock to sleep in as well as a cosy blanket in the sleeping area of the hutch.

Ferrets are known to be escape artists so ensure that there are no gaps in anything that they go in.

Ours have a run that we put on the garden patio as they will dig out on soft ground, such as a lawn, if we don’t keep a very close eye on them.

We feed them on raw mince and ferret kibble ( available from pet stores).

They drink from a rabbit/guinea pig water bottle which hangs on the front of the wire mess on the hutch door.

Feed your ferrets every day and clean out their home on a regular basis; more often than not.

Female ferrets can become extremely ill if they are not used for breeding and come into heat, so take the cost of neturing into consideration before purchasing.

They will also benefit from regular flea treatment.

As with all children’s pets be prepared to take over their care, if children become bored with them and loose interest.

Always supervise children when they are handling any pets and ensure they wash their hands agterwards.

As always questions and comments are welcome.

Until next time.

    1. I have two ferrets brother and sister. The boy ferret with only 3 legs enjoys a a daily walk on a leash round the block his sister has a walk on a leash around my allotment and is particularly fascinated by the pond I have.

  1. Brilliant names! Really gave me a giggle. They sound like good pets to have, I didn’t know about handling them everyday but it makes so much sense for all caged animals to be regularly touched so as not to get frightened.
