Pets for children: horses and ponies

I have always been horse mad and wanted my own horse for as long as I can remember; I used to say that I wanted to marry a rich farmer, as a way of getting my own equine. Sadly that never happened, however, I spent many happy hours riding various horses belonging to others ( even managing to keep it up after suffering a stroke).

.

I f you are thinking of getting a horse or pony as a pet for a child there are many things to consider:-

Horses are an expensive and time consuming animal to keep. It is not buying a horse that costs the most-it is keeping one; there are vets bills to consider,( get your horse or pony insured to help with this cost), feed, tack, bedding, cost of having a farrier come every 6 weeks or so, as well as the expense of renting stables and land, if you don’t have your own.

Think about how you are going to transport your pony if your child wants to compete in gymkhanas or other competitions. Can your child actually ride well enough to handle their own horse, or will he need hours of lessons first?

Does your child have enough time to care for a pony, while still doing homework and chores? A horse can’t just be put in a field and forgotten about.

I would strongly recommend taking an experienced friend along when viewing perspective horses and ponies, as it can be a minefield.

HAPPY AND SAFE RIDING.

As always questions and comments are welcome.

Until next time.

  1. Yes it is all true you need to have plenty of money to own and keep a horse. At least you managed to have plenty of experiences over the years to enjoy your passion for horses.

  2. My daughter did it for a number of years, but we never acquired a pony, they were in the stables where we went. A lovely pastimes/ #KCACOLS

  3. It was my dream to have a pony as a child but was never allowed. Now I have a whole farm and 3 ponies and not one of my 6 kids is interested! #KCACOLS

  4. Horses are such beautiful animals. Owning one would definitely be a blessing but for now we will enjoy watching and the occasional ride. #ALittleBitOfEverything

  5. I dreamed of having a horse when I was a child. My much older brother used to say he would get me one but it never happened. I also wanted a rocking horse and still need to put that in place. I did live horse-riding on a Brownie holiday and later as an adult. #AnythingGoes

  6. My niece has fortnightly horse riding lessons and loves them. I love horses too! Thanks for joining in with #ThatFridayLinky

  8. Many of my friends grew up with horses and have their own now as adults, some of them compete in events. I’ve always seen horses more of a lifestyle than a pet because of how all consuming they can become! As a child I had a rabbit and that was all my parents could handle…!

  9. I used to go horse riding as a child but never owned a horse. Its such a huge commitment and responsibility you need to be aware of all that is involved before jumping into it! Thanks for linking up with #kcacols hope you can join us again next time.

  10. I grew up on a farm where several people stabled their horses, so I got to ride a bit as a kid and also got to see how much work it took to keep them.

  11. The closest I got to wanting a horse growing up was the Black Beauty stories, and the TV programme. In reality, I imagine it’s a lot of hard work – thanks for sharing with #PoCoLo

  12. As you know I had ponies growing up and still love horses-even if I don’t have the time or money to have one now! Funnily enough I have really missed it recently-think it’s the good weather- so may look into lessons in the future when I have some time. Thanks for sharing with us #AdventureCalling
