Visiting a child minder to make enquiries about day care for a child can be a daunting prospect for some parents.
I tried to make them feel at ease by telling them as much as possible about my setting and the way I worked at the first interview.
What to say a first interview with parents here
If your child minder isn’t quite as informative you should start by asking to see the registration certificate ( which should be on display on a wall anyway) and ask how long she/he has been child minding and what qualifications they have, again asking to see certificates and the latest Ofsted report.
Registered child minders will have several policies and procedures in place here
You will most likely already know which schools/nurseries, the child minder will collect from, if this is required.
Other things to ask are how many other children and their age does the person also look after,
.
Are there any additional costs for food or trips out here
Are there charges for any sick days and holidays? ( both for child minder and child)
Do they accept the nursery education voucher?
Where will my child sleep at naptime?
How do they manage behaviour?
I used to finish the interview by telling parents that if they thought of any other questions when they got home to phone me.
I would suggest writing down any questions that you have for a child minder before meeting them and to visit as many as possible before deciding which one suits you and your child best and to go with your gut feelings.
As always questions and comments are welcome.
Until next time.

Oh, thanks, Lydia
A really helpful post and thanks for sharing links to your posts about policies/qualifications- I imagine most people don’t know what it is they are looking for.
