Following on from last week’s post about how to encourage a child to take a daytime nap more on that here
If you have older children who don’t require a nap. I suggested giving them some quiet activities to do:
Here are some of my ideas:-
JIGSAW PUZZLES:
There are so many jigsaws on the market- from simple shapes for younger children to puzzles with hundreds of pieces, so you should be able to come up with something suitable for your child.
PAINTING OR DRAWING:
PLAYDOUGH:
This was my go to quiet activity for the children when I was a registered child minder.Easy playdough recipe herehttps://thenextbestthingtomummy.com/non-cook-playdough-which-i-made-with-one-working-hand/
My favourite children’s books here
OUTSIDE PLAY:
If the weather is fine send them out into the garden to play.
Toys that are suitable for outside here
WATCH A TELEVISION PROGRAMME:
I am not a fan of too much screen time for children, but letting them sit quietly to watch an educational television programme while a younger child is asleep won’t do any damage.
CONSTRUCTION TOYS::
Such as. Lego, stickle bricks and building blocks.
SEWING:
: The school aged children that I looked after during the school holidays enjoyed sewing; I found felt to be the best material to work with as it doesn’t fray and it is also inexpensive ( I purchased a large bag of felt pieces for a few pounds in a local market.
FUZZY FELTS:
These are not so popular now as when I was a child, but I found that the children in my care enjoyed making pictures with them.
Please add to my list by leaving me a comment.
As always questions and comments are welcome.
Until next time.

My kids took a stack of books into their quiet time. It was also a greater time to tidy up their room.
That’s a great idea, Michele, thanks for sharing
Great selection of quiet ideas. I used to love Fuzzy Felt when I was little. We had a couple of felt items for the kids but not the range that there was 35 years ago! Thanks for linking up with #DreamTeam
Fuzzy felts do seem to have gone out of fashion, Laura, thanks for leaving your thoughts
I always find giving kids chalks to use outside is a nice quiet activity.
Thanks for linking with #pocolo
It’s funny that you say that, we have literally just come home from shopping and the pavement is covered with chalk from the neighbouring children
