Review of a first book of the sea

Walker books sent this delightful children’s picture book.

A first book of the sea is written by Nicola Davies.

It is a hardback book full of heartwarming poems about the sea; from blue whales to plankton, there is something for everyone, I love this book because children will be delighted as they recall holidays by the sea when they are read it’s contents.

Inside the book is a place for a child to write his name.

Some of my favourite poems are the one about seagulls  and on the pier because they are written in rhyme, which regular readers of my posts will be aware that I adore this style of writing for children.

The book is full of beautiful, colourful illustrations by Emily Sutton.

Emily really manages to capture the ambience of the sea and the sea shore, I could almost smell the salty air as I was reading the book!

A first book of the sea is published by Walker books and retails at £14.99 which may sound expensive but as it has over 100 pages to enjoy over and over again, plus some educational material I feel it is worth every penny.

The publisher recommends that it is suitable for age 3 plus, I think it would delight all ages as even younger children  will enjoy the illustrations and adults will benefit from reading the poems to children.

A first book of the sea would make a great Christmas gift.

Disclosure: I was gifted this book for the purpose of the review but all opinions are my own.

As always questions, comments and topic suggestions are welcome and remember to share on social media.

Until next time.

  1. I love poetry books especially to introduce to kids. And any books about the sea have to be read right? x #TwinklyTuesday

  2. I love poetry books for children, and this is a lovely book about the sea too. I really like when a book encourages the child to put in their name and personalise it. A lot of my older kid’s books had this in them but it seems rarer these days.

  3. This looks like a lovely book, with gorgeous illustrations. I’m sure my little girl would love it. She’s into anything sea-related at the minute #kcacols

  4. I have seen the book in the book shop. It looks lovely. I have to admit that I was put off the £14:99 price tag – that is quite a lot. But 100 pages is good and I do love the pictures. Thanks for the review. Pen x #KCACOLS

  5. A beautiful book that is really full and lively. Just right for getting the little ones involved with learning. Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next time. Mainy

  6. Karen this looks a wonderful book! We are only a mile and a half from the sea here, and my kids have practically grown up on the beach. Might have to invest in this! #KCACOLS

  7. This looks like a lovely book. I have literally just tweeted about some adventure books that my school library (I’m a teacher by day) has recently acquired, so I’ll keep an eye for this too. Thanks for joining #adventurecalling we’ll be back open in the morning for more new posts.
