Mylene Klass has said that she does regular fire drills with her children.
This made me think; adults have fire drills at work and children have them in schools so why don’t they have them at home where they spend the most amount of time?
Mylene said that she makes if fun so the children aren’t afraid and she has told them never to hide under a bed if there is a fire because that would make it difficult for them to be found in smokey conditions.
When I was working as a registered child minder I did a fire drill on a termly basis.
Another child minder would ring at a random time to say that there was a fire in a certain room in my house: I would then lead the children out into the garden.
All the child minders who were members of the child minding network in my town had to draw a plan of the escape routes in their home and show it to the child minding network co-ordinator: I would also ring other child minders in the network telling them that they had a fire. so they too could practise a drill.
A family workshop group that I attended with the children had a fire fighter come and give us all a talk and we also visited the fire station as a group,
.
People who help us here
Do /would you do fire drills at home?
As always questions and comments are welcome.
Until next time.

Yes! I did fire drills in my Assisted Living building so my staff knew what to do to help our residents and keep everyone safe. Fire drills should be done without fear, that is the key.
Thanks for sharing, Melynda
Yes! You never know when you might need littles to be able to leave the house quickly incase of an emergency. Practice is a fab way of making it feel less scary to them. Thank you for sharing this important post with the #DreamTeam x
Thanks for your positive words, Annette
Yes absolutely get them prepared in case of a real life event x #pocolo
Thanks for your input, Sam
we haven’t done an actual drill but there have certainly been conversations about what to do in a fire or several other emergency type conversations. I think periodic reminders are important but I don’t know that I need my kid actually crawling out her window into a bush is necessary. At least I hope not #dreamteam
Thanks for sharing those sensible ideas, Jeremy
Just returning back from #dreamteam
We’ve never done one. I do sometimes wonder what we’d do because I’m not sure if N would know how to react at home, especially if we were stuck.
Perhaps, now is the time, Emma
I am a fire marshal at the school I work for and on the course they said we should have fire drills at home. We haven’t done one from upstairs but the kids know to go straight out the front or back door in an emergency. Thanks for linking up with #DreamTeam
That’s wonderful, thanks for sharing, Laura
We had an extension creating a 3rd floor, we had to have fire drills and plan escape routes with the fire brigade as part of our planning permission. Thanks for joining in with #pocolo
