A 4 year old girl was in the news this week because she bravely managed to call for an ambulance when her mother collapsed in front of her.
I taught my own children how to dial 999 if the need arose and also how to phone my mother for help, I did this in a calm, relaxed way so I didn’t frighten them.
A newly registered child minder has also messaged me asking what would happen if she was taken ill while she had children in her care.
I remeasured her by saying that in the 14 years that I was a child minder this had never happened; But I did have an emergency back up plan just in case though more here.
All the children in my care knew where I kept my first aid box ( next to the biscuit tin and they all knew where that was!).
On one occasion I was sitting with a child reading a story when she suddenly sneezed and her nose started pouring with blood. I stayed calm and asked the oldest child to fetch me the first aid box: So I could put on some gloves and to get some kitchen roll to mop up the blood. I didn’t want the other children to be afraid of the sight in front of them, so I calmly asked the bleeding child if she had nose bleeds before. She nodded her head, but when her mother came to collect her and I asked her to sign my accident book more here she told me that this had never happened before.
One little boy excitedly told the parent that one nostril had red blood and the other white blood coming out! I don’t know what he was talking about, but that certainly never happened!
I am so gratful that when I suffered a massive stroke it was at the weekend, not on a day that my minded children would have witnessed it.
As always questions and comments are welcome.
Until next time.

Karen, this is such wonderful information and definitely a resource to teach children what to do in an emergency.
Visiting today from #PoCoLo #20&21
Thanks for leaving your thoughts
Good tips – I once read a thing that said before you let your kids babysit you should cover what to do if there was a fire or if someone broke into the house – I thought ‘I don’t know what to do if someone broke into the house’. But we made plans. Best plans are those you never have to use…Sounds scary on the stroke tho. Hope you were okay.
Great advice, Lydia, scream very loudly if someone broke into your house, I’d say!

scary stuff. I tried to prepare mine as best I could but I’m not sure how capable she would have been at 4 either to be honest #dreamteam
I expect she would have coped, Jeremy, hopefully you will never need to know!
These are some wonderful tips! This is such an important thing to ensure that kids know how to do.
Ah, thank you, Crystal
Such an important thing to remember. You really never know do you. Thank you for the reminder. We’ve taught this to our little one, but I think I’m over due doing a refresher with her. Thank you for joining us for the #dreamteam x
