As a parent and former registered child minder, I can remember the challenge of persuading a baby to keep her hat on:-
My tips for this are:-
To start getting baby used to wearing a hat as soon as possible after birth – no matter what season they are born; whether it’s a sun or warm winter hat.
Choose the right hat for your child; there are many different styles available.
Be consistent and persistent, if your baby pulls it off, put it straight back on ( it’s not going to work if you give up and let the child go without a hat when they really should be wearing one for protection from the elements).
Make it fun: Put the hat on your head and take it off again, put it on back to front.
Be a good role model by wearing your own hat.
Try giving them a distraction while you put the hat on their head, for example, look at the bird in the tree, etc.
Make sure the hat is a good fit/comfortable to wear.
As the child grows include them in choosing their own hat.
Please share any tips for keeping a baby’s hat on.
As always questions and comments are welcome.
Until next time.

It’s a well known fact that babies hate wearing hats as well as socks. I was lucky as I had three girls and hats for little girls were easily fasten . I’ve lost count of how many times I used to see the odd sock or shoes that little ones had tossed out of the pram. This could have been very costly especially the price of children’s shoes. This has been a very good blog and I loved the idea of the fun way of the parent using the hats .
Thanks for your input, Pearl
I am not sure my boys ever kept their hats on for more than about one minute. My twin girls were much better at resisting the urge to take off their hats #MischiefAndMemories
What does that tell us about boys, I wonder
Bane of my life keeping a hat on my daughter when she was a baby. She’s approaching 4 now and it’s much easier now she can choose her own style of hat and now she understands why she needs to wear one.

Pleased to hear that it’s easier now that your daughter is older and understands, Katrina, thanks for sharing
My wonderful mum sewed chin straps on all our summer hats to discourage removal! It was very effective while they were small although once they got bigger they soon worked out how to just pull them forward instead of up to get them off. My son still hates hats at 10 but luckily my daughter has decided they are “cool”! #mischiefandmemories
Ha! children are clever, aren’t they, Louise?
My children have been fairly good at keeping hats on – we had ones with velcro straps under the chin which stopped them pulling them off as babies and then I’ve tried to be consistent with keeping them on in the summer (and in the winter) which I think does help. #MischiefandMemories
Sounds like you had a plan that worked for you, Louise, thanks for sharing
Mine has always loved wearing hats. I don’t know if it was something we specifically encouraged, but her hat collection by the age of 3 beat my shoe collection! Lots of great tips in your post to help with any parents struggling. Thank you for joining us for #mischiefandmemories 🙂
Thanks for your comment and for having me a part of your linky, Annette
I despair with hats – all mine have hated them in summer & winter! The tie on ones have been the worst! #mischiefandmemories
Oh dear, thanks for sharing that experience
I am a winter hat person but love the sun on my face in summer so don’t even own a summer hat! Maybe I should start setting an example… Thanks for linking up with #MischiefAndMemories
Snap!Laura, I don’t own a summer hat either with an addiction to the sun why would I want to shade my face?
