Tips to help your baby through teething

Having your baby go through the teething stage can be a stressful time for parents:

My own children didn’t suffer too badly, thank goodness; I remember them having bright red cheeks, dribbling more than usual and the occasional loose nappy- all common signs that teeth are on the way.

To prevent the skin from getting sore from the dribbling, put a bib on your baby, you can place it under the clothes if you prefer. I put a teething ring in the fridge as having something cold and hard to bite on helps with cutting teeth.

If your child can manage finger foods safely then carrot sticks chilled in the fridge , a chunk of crusty bread or a baby rusk can give some relief ( never leave a child unattended when chewing on food, in case of choking).

Gently rubbing gums with a clean finger may give some comfort.

If your baby is really upset and crying a lot, take some time out, A walk on a pleasant day can benefit both you and your baby, even having a soak in a warm, bubble bath, while your partner watches baby can help you relax and unwind.

There are products available to help with teething from pain relieving powders and gels to teething necklaces.

Teething won’t last forever and you should start cleaning your baby’s teeth as soon as the first one is cut.

As always questions and comments are welcome.

Until next time.

  1. Some great tips Karen, I never thought of tucking the bib under their clothing, I always used to leave it over their clothes, a simple trick.

All my little ones when they were teething all loved carrot sticks to chomp on when they were cutting teeth.

Great post thank you for sharing.

  2. I saw your link on the Anything Goes Link Up. These are great tips! Like you mentioned, we have found that rubbing the gums and a cold teether help a lot. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Luckily my daughter didn’t struggle too much with her teeth, I do remember the horrid nappies that went with it and she always had nappy rash when she was teething.
