Child minding sick policy

When I was a registered child minder I had several different policies here, but I didn’t have a sickness policy. Looking back I wish that I had, obviously I told parents at the first interview here that I wasn’t allowed to look after any child who was unwell; because of the risk of spreading infections.

.

To be honest most of the parents that I worked with were very good and didn’t send sick children to me.

But being a working parent can be difficult if your boss isn’t sympathetic towards you taking time off because your child is unwell and on the odd occasion a parent would send a child without mentioning that they were under the weather: As soon as I discovered that a child wasn’t well I would ring the parent and ask them to collect their offspring as soon as possible.

Even then I was sometimes told that the child was fine to stay because they would feel better soon. I then had to insist that the child was collected.

Then I had to tell a parent that their child would have to stay away from my setting for a few days or weeks ( depending on what the incubation period was for whatever was wrong with them)

: Again parents felt under pressure to get back to work and sometimes tried telling me that a doctor had said that they were well enough to return,.

What happens when it’s the child minder who is unwell I hear you ask? read about that here

Do you have a sick policy? Please share with me.

As always questions and comments are welcome.

Until next time,

Karen

  1. Now with COVID, I’ve kept my daughter home when in ‘normal’ times I would have sent her. It’s so hard to tell (if she’s faking or just feeling a bit rubbish, or if it’s something ‘coming’). #Dreamteam

  2. It’s so hard isn’t it. On one hand, it’s not going to help anyone to bring a child who is sick into a childcare setting. But on the other hand, how sick is sick. Especially when it come to winter coughs which can last weeks. Thank you for joining us for the #DreamTeam xx

  3. This is really relevant to me this week as we’ve had a poorly child at school and his parents insisted on sending him to after school club instead of collecting him. The poor child needed to be home in bed! Thanks for linking up with #dreamteam
