Is now the right time to shorten the long summer school break?

July 8, 2022 Karen 8 comments

There has been talk about shortening the long summer school break for many years as a way to save heating costs during the winter months; the idea being making the summer holiday 2 weeks shorter and adding that to the Christmas break ( so parents would have to find the extra heating money!).

But the last few years have seen a different way of schooling altogether thanks to the Corvid 19 virus parents had to home school their children for many, many months.

So is now the time to make the summer break shorter to give children a chance to catch up on their education?

!NOOOOOO!!!” I hear millions of children and teachers yelling!

I remember that feeling of the last day of term knowing that I had weeks and weeks of no school and not having to be woken up earlier than in the holidays.

And children are easier to entertain when the weather is good.

I loved having my children at home when they were of school age and working as a registered child minder the summer break was one of the most enjoyable times; for me and the children.

My grandchildren have already broken up for summer: They live in Scotland where term dates are different from England.

Any parents and carers who struggle with finding things to do with their children may find my e book ( which I wrote to help parents through the lockdowns ) helpful

Only 99p available to download from Amazon here

So is now the time to shorten the school summer break?

  1. I think 6 weeks holiday in the summer is a long time, I also think it’s a shame that very often children break up way before Christmas and then go back quite soon after, I think an extra week added on to the end of the the Christmas holiday would be good, plus it saves on heating and lighting for schools,p

  2. People used to all leave school at 14 so I don’t think the last few years will impact the educational level (emotional development is another thing!!) and as for summer holidays, aren’t they just the best memories? Those lazy days in the sunshine? I’d be fighting to keep those for as long as I could! #Dreamteam

  3. No I agree with the above, let them have longer off school when the weather is more likely to be nice, I definitely don’t want longer off at October or Easter, the weather is always a nightmare! Christmas I could live with as long as it was the January side so they can have longer playing with their new toys but personally I love having my son home all day for a long break over the summer!
