My first phonic colouring book Initial Letter sounds; children’s book review

I came across this book on social media and was attracted by it straight away because it’s just the thing that my youngest son loved to do when he was growing up ( he is the youngest of 4 siblings) and always wanted to be ‘a big boy’ like his brothers and as they had homework from school every evening. He loved to sit with me and do what he called his learning book homework.

!

What I especially like about this colouring book is that the author has put a note to parents at the beginning: Explaining that all children are individuals and will therefore learn at different rates, ( It is sometimes difficult for parents not to compare their children to other children).

Each page has a letter of the alphabet and a picture of something beginning with that letter for children to colour in: Colouring helps with building fine motor skills, especially if children learn to colour within the lines.

It’s also great for learning colour recognition and developing language and communication skills.

Under each picture there is the initial letter written in dots for children to trace.

Following on from the initial letter page, are 5 pictures and words: 3 of which begin with the initial letter that the child has been learning and an instruction to draw a line from the letter to the relevant pictures; this activity is fantastic for developing hand-to-eye co-ordination in children.

Disclosure: I was gifted the book for the purpose of this review, but all opinions are my own.

My first Phonic colouring book is written by Abigail Thompson, who taught children to read for 40 years.

I absolutly love this book and would have made great use of it when I was working as a registered child minder, because what is better for young children than to learn while having fun?

The book retails at£4.75 from Amazon and as a digitial downlosd for £2 http://nestairpublishing.com/.
