Review of my mood stars

When Wendy got in touch to ask if I would review this product I agreed instantly as it looked like a great resource for early years settings  and as I was a child minder for many years, I know about such things.

My mood stars were invented by Wendy White  a former registered child minder to relate to all 7 areas of learning in the early years foundation stage.

There are 8 stars all of which can be hugged, like a cuddly toy, by a child, they are: shy star, sad star, scared star, happy star, cross star, surprised star, silly star and sleepy star.

Each star is made in a soft yellow fabric which makes them appealing to look at and will suit children of all ages.

They can be used as part of imaginative role play and offer opportunities for children to express how they are feeling, which can be especially helpful for children with a speech delay to encourage talking or for children with special needs such as autism or down syndrome to help explain how they feel.

The stars come with a board were they can be stuck for safe keeping and display, plus an accompanying book which has space opposite a picture of each star  for the practitioner and children to write notes or draw pictures of their thoughts and feelings.

As well as being used as a talking prompt the stars can be a part of several games – the adult picks up a star and asks the children to identify and explain the emotion or they could say to a child, “Today how are you feeling?” and encourage them to chose the appropriate star.

I feel that the ways of using the mood stars are endless  and teachers will, I am confident think of ways of utilising them to suit the individual children in their group.

I would highly recommend this product for all early years settings especially those which have children with special educational needs and for special educational needs co-coordinators (S.E.N.C.O.S) and feel sure that Ofsted inspectors would be equally impressed by seeing it in settings when they visit.

My mood stars are suitable for all ages and retail at £29.99 purchase them at www.mymoodstars.co.uk

Disclosure: I was sent this product for the purpose of the review but all opinions are my own.

  1. What a lovely idea, the different uses would be endless. The stars look really cute and would be well loved especially by special needs children. Another good review Karen.

  2. This is such a wonderful idea to teach a child about emotions and to get them to talk about their own, no doubt they’ll be useful for child psychologists.
Thank you for sharing this with us at #TriumphantTales. I hope to see you back next week! (Dont forget to pick up your featured badge for your post lastweek!)

  4. I wish we had things like this when I was growing up. It is so important to teach our kinder that we have emotions, not all of them feel particularly good, and how to express them so they don’t eat our insides out! Bravo to these stars! #KCACOLS xo

  5. I’ve seen these before and thought then that they might be useful for us, and your review here is further convincing me that they could indeed be helpful. Lovely to see that so much thought and care has gone into the product. #KCACOLS
